Heartstart Brackley is a scheme associated with the British Heart Foundation. It teaches members of the public
Emergency Life Support skills (basic life support). The course lasts for two hours and is free to local members of the public.
Heartstart Brackley is run and organised by the Brackley Community First
Responders, the volunteer arm of the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, who deal with many different types of 999
call every day, voluntarily, supporting the local Ambulance Service.
The BHF is keeen to emphasise the importance of as many people as possible learning these skills because:
- Every year around 124,000 people in the UK suffer a heart attack;
- Many of them suffer cardiac arrest and die before reaching hospital;
- Without resuscitation, cardiac arrest is always fatal;
- By performing CPR, bystanders can double the person's chances of survival.
Through Heartstart, the British Heart
Foundation promotes and develops Emergency Life Support training across the UK. Although Heartstart has already trained
millions of people, the BHF aims to help even more to save lives whilst waiting for professional help to arrive, and works
with a number of partners to achieve this end.
